Cheap Thrills - January 2023

This month: chiptune, emo, math rock, and more!

The one year anniversary of Cheap Thrills is upon us, and as luck would have it...I'm late.

In my defense, I've been super busy this month, so this this means that I have not had as much time to write up my thoughts on the latest "name your price" goodies that have found their way into my music library--and my heart. However, I'll try to compensate for the briefer blurbs with more albums than usual. Hopefully that'll even things out!

Here are your first Cheap Thrills of the new year, just in time for Bandcamp Friday on February 3rd. Start building your cart now and support the underground!

Lyndsie Alguire - the pause in you

Sparse, haunting piano compositions, poetic in their brevity and deceptive simplicity.

Notches - Almost Ruined Everything

This alternative/indie/emo trio brings us back to the 90s with huge crunchy riffs and endearing slacker vocals. Think Dinosaur Jr. meets The Dismemberment Plan.

Castle Turing - Castle Turing

Chiptune from the grimmest (and grimiest) of Gameboys, with a few tracks that go surprisingly hard thanks to punchy percussion that belies the artist's potential punk and metal influences--just check out those sick beats on "Tunnels and Triumphs" and "Skeleton Machines".

NYOS - Celebration

Instrumental rock that playfully dances between knotty syncopated shuffles, fuzzy walls of distorted guitars, twinkling synth raves, and Battles-esque whimsy.

Shannen Moser - you shouldnt be doing that

I recently came across Shannen Moser's latest album The Sun Still Seems to Move, which is a lush and ambitious folk odyssey that continues to unfold new layers every time I listen to it. you shouldnt be doing that is a slightly different affair: a free lo-fi demo full of 1-2 minute micro songs that nonetheless showcase Moser's impeccable vocal harmonies and wonderfully nostalgic lyrics.

Reverie - everything repeats itself forever

Raucous yet melodic Italian screamo/hardcore for fans of Birds in Row, Daitro, Loma Prieta, etc.
